This article popped up onto my feed this past weekend from venture beat:  Growing your company: Why the North Star metric works .  I thought this was a great article and something worth reposting.  Every company needs a guiding light or a north star, ideally this north star is measurable and becomes one of the guiding checks when evaluating key business decisions.  Give this article a read, its pretty good.
